James Howard was a self taught watercolourist whose style has been likened to the Norwich School of artists, best represented by John Sell Cotman. His works, representing seascape with sailing barges, landscapes of heather and sheep, or rural industry of farms and mills, harken back to a more peaceful age.
His watercolours have a delicacy of detail, colouring and transparency which is best suited to the medium, he did some work in oils but they were less successful. He was a profilic sketcher, when out in the country side he was seldom without a sketch pad, sometimes only a few inches square, othertimes more substantial, and these were a constant source of refernce in later life, often an object in a picture could be traced back to a sketch made, maybe, 30 years earlier.
It was in 1932 that his work was first hung in the Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition, at that time one of the youngest artists to be so selected, and again in 1936 and 1949. In 1938 he was proud to be a be accepted as a member of the prestigious Artists' Society, later the Langham Sketch Club, in London, which met on Wednesday evenings to paint a small picture which was then criticised by the group and a good dinner followed. His work was also shown in the municipal galleries in Hull and Liverpool, galleries abroad, and was part of a British Council travelling exhibition.
He moved to Ditchling in 1970 and undertook some teaching.
