An original mid-19th century watercolour by British artist James Burrell Smith (1822-1897). The painting depicts a breathtaking view of the Lake District from Grasmere's Old Road. A horse and cart can be seen in the foreground, closely followed by a local countryman and young lady. The watercolour has been indistinctly signed by the artist to the lower left. Well-presented in a wash-line mount and fine gilt-effect frame.Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration.

Artist Biography
James Burrell Smith (1822-1897) - Fine Original Mid 19th Century Watercolour. A painter in both watercolour and oil, Smith was born in the south of England but lived in the north, in Alnwick, Northumberland, from 1843 to 1854 and studied with the Newcastle master Thomas Miles Richardson, Sr. (1784-1848). In 1854 he moved to London, where he set up as a drawing master and built up an extensive teaching practice, concentrating on watercolour painting. Smith’s own style is based on that of his teacher Richardson. He exhibited at Suffolk Street London 1850 to 1881 and painted in Northumberland, the Lake District, Scotland, Wales, Germany, and elsewhere.
