James Burrell Smith (1822-1897) was a painter in both watercolours and oils born in London. He moved to Northumberland in 1843, where he studied with the Newcastle master Thomas Miles Richardson, Sr. (1784-1848). In 1854 he moved to London, where he set up as a drawing master and built up an extensive teaching practice, concentrating on watercolour painting. Smith's own style is based on that of his teacher Richardson. He exhibited at Suffolk Street, London, from 1850 to 1881 and painted in Northumberland, the Lake District, Scotland, Wales, and Germany. His work is held by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge; Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle; National Gallery of Wales, Cardiff; and Alnwick Castle, Northumberland.
