Artist Biography
Sir James Braithwaite Peile was an Indian administrator and amateur artist. He was educated at Repton and Oriel College, Oxford. In 1856 he joined the Bombay service and held various posts in the Bombay government. He was on furlough in England from September 1867 to April 1869. He served on the Bombay Council from 1883 to 1886 and was involved in the improvement of education - he was elected Vice-Chancellor of the University in 1884 - and agriculture. He left India in 1877 on his nomination to the India Council at Whitehall, on which he served until his retirement in 1902. He made many atmospheric brown wash and occasional watercolour drawings of India as well as working in black and white. After his return, he sketched widely throughout Britain, especially in seaside towns and cities.
