Artist Biography

James Boswell was a painter, political cartoonist, printmaker and illustrator, born Westport, New Zealand. He studied at Elam School of Art, Auckland, and in 1925 he travelled to London where he attended the RCA for a further four years. By 1927 he was showing with the London Group and mixing with left-wing journalists and Marxist poets. In 1932 he abandoned his painting to join the Communist Party and turned instead to illustration, caricature and graphic design. With his friends Pearl Binder, James Fitton and James Holland he became a founder member of the Artists' International Association and was represented in the retrospective exhibition in 1983 which was held at the MoMa, Oxford.

This led in 1934 to his illustrating one of the most radical periodicals of the day, the Left Review. In 1936 he was appointed art director of the Asiatic Petroleum Company (later known as Shell) a position he held for over ten years. Boswell also illustrated for Lilliput and was its art editor 1947-50. He returned to painting during the 1940’s and also exhibited at the RA, RSA, NEAC and at the John Moores Liverpool Exhibition. During the 1960’s he held solo exhibitions at the Drian Gallery, New Vision Centre and at the Commonwealth Institute, London. His work is represented in Burgh House, Hampstead, Derby Art Gallery, Dudley Art Gallery, IWM, Tate Gallery, Towner Art Gallery and the V&A.
