Jakob Frey after Domenichino - 18th Century Engraving The Triumph of David

Description

An engraving by Johann Jakob Frey the Elder (1681-1752) after Domenichino (1581-1641), printed from the original plate, depicting the Old Testament scene of David's triumphal entry into Jerusalem after defeating the Philistines' champion Goliath. Presented in an oak frame with a gilt-effect slip. First published c.1710, however this impression is on wove which dates it to the latter half of the 18th century. There is an impression in reverse in the British Museum.

Condition

Cropped outside the plate lines. There is some foxing and discolouration. There are some historic bookworm holes in the upper-right quadrant and to the left side.

Artist Biography

Johann Jakob Frey the Elder (1681-1752) was a Swiss engraver. Frey was born at Lucerne. After learning the principles of design he went to Rome at the age of twenty-two, where he received some instruction from Arnold van Westerhout and afterwards had the advantage of studying in the school of Carlo Maratti, at the same time with Robert van Auden-Aerd. His progress was rapid, and he was soon regarded as one of the ablest artists at Rome. His drawing is correct and tasteful, and he was a perfect master of harmony and effect. He etched his plates with spirit and worked over the etching with a firm and masterly hand. Few artists have approached nearer to the style of the painters from whom they engraved than Frey. He died at Rome, aged seventy.
