Artist Biography

James William Hepburn (1881-1961) was an architect, printmaker and painter who was articled to a firm of Scottish architects, 1897-1902. Hepburn studied at Glasgow School of Art, intermittently setting out on sketching tours of England, Northern France and Belgium. He moved to London in 1902 and secured a position in the London County Council’s Architect's Department, and whilst there he won the Grissell Gold Medal in 1904 and remained with the London County Council until his retirement in 1944. In 1906 he was elected an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects and after a lifetime's work on housing projects he was made a Fellow in 1942. He was elected to the RBA in 1924 and exhibited many times there and once at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. During World War I Hepburn saw active service in France with the 1st Btn of the London Scottish. He died in Worthing, Sussex.
