A stunning late 19th century oil depicting the expansive landscape of Penmaenpool, North Wales. The area of Dolgellau is known for its many lakes and mountain ranges, and during the 19th century it was a desirable location for landscape painters seeking vast expansive scenes, without having to travel to the continent.
Although we have little biographical information on J. Maurice, it's clear he was a skilled painter from his use of colour and tone, and handling of the medium. The expressive marks made in the foreground add texture and perspective to the composition, while the dominating mountains are wonderfully carved out by his use of light.
An inscription by the artist on the reverse reads 'Pen-Man-Poll, Near Dalgelly', it's clear from this incorrect English spelling that Maurice isn't a native Welshman. His highly stylized composition of the Welsh countryside also reveals that he was keen to depict a quintessential rural scene for his viewers.
Well presented in a cream and gilt lacquered frame with ornate detail.
Signed. On canvas on stretchers.There is a very minor small hole to the canvas at the lower right, quite close to the signature. There are areas of craqueleur and discolouration. The frame is in very good condition. The painting has been finished with a shiny varnish.
