Two workhorses pull a cart in this charming harbour scene by Dutch artist Johannes Martinus Wilhelmus Kessler (1903–1952). Kessler employs an Impressionistic style, taking particular care in rendering the sturdy forms of the horses. The work is signed to the lower right and is well presented in a gold and silver frame with a white inner border. On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age, including some slight discolouration. Inspection under UV light reveals no apparent restoration. Minor surface wear to the frame. Overall the artwork is in very good condition.
