J. Hamilton Mackenzie was a painter and etcher who studied at Glasgow School of Art and won a travelling scholarship to Italy to further his studies. During World War I James was in Africa and sketched much of his surroundings. An Associate of the RSA and the RE the also exhibited at the RSW, GI, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and at the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts. Examples of his paintings are in the collections of Glasgow Museums, Paisley Museum and Art Galleries, Williamson Art Gallery and the McLean Museum and Art Gallery. His wife Margaret Thomson Wilson was also an artist. the died at Helensburgh
