J. Grant - Fine 19th Century Pastel Crashing Waves
Description
A very fine and atmospheric 19th Century seascape in pastel with charcoal details, by the artist J. Grant. Two seafaring vessels are depicted in stormy waters, with billowing sails and waves breaching the decks. A subtle play of light on the surface of the waves is suggestive of the struggle for sunlight, and the dark unknown of the expansive seas.
The artist has a clear proficiency for the medium, with delicate layered pastel work, contrasting with fine lined charcoal details. The overall setting exudes drama and movement. Well-presented in a dark oak frame with inner gilt beading, as shown.
Signed. On wove.Condition
In very good condition overall, for a picture of this age. The frame has some minor surface marks and scuffing to the corners. Small historic losses to the lower edge of the frame.
