An accomplished watercolour of the Hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso, perched below a sheer cliff and overlooking the Borromeo Gulf at Lake Maggiore. The Hermitage was founded in the 12th century and the present buildings date from the late 13th to early 14th centuries. Today the monastery is run by a community of Oblate Benedictines. The artist speculates on the function of the building in the inscription to the reverse, 'Lake Maggiore, Italy, with monastery now disused but perhaps now hotel'. Inscribed with the location to the lower-right edge. Presented in an ornate gilt-effect frame with leaf and berry detailing and a gilt-effect slip. Signed to the reverse. On watercolour paper.
Condition
Some minor foxing and discolouration. Some discolouration to the slip and dirt trapped beneath the glazing. Some chips and small repairs to the frame. Overall in good condition.
