A remarkably dynamic and vivid watercolour by the mid 19th Century artist J.C.A. Marston, depicting the source of the River Aire, near Malham, Yorkshire, England. Highly stylised rock formations demonstrate the artists innovative style, well ahead of his time. Monogrammed and dated to the lower right. Inscribed, signed and dated in graphite to the reverse '22nd December 1849'. On wove.

Condition

In good condition overall, for a picture of this age. Some light surface discolouration. Very minor restored crease to the lower left corner.

Artist Biography

J.C.A. Marston was a mid 19th Century watercolourist with a remarkably dynamic approach to form and palette, seemingly far ahead of the prevalent styles of the period. Shunning traditional artistic endeavours, Marston crafted highly illustrative, almost theatrical settings, with a focus on light, shadow and depth. His work includes architectural studies, genre scenes, portraiture, river settings and the natural world. Evidently well-travelled, his work depicts Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England.
