A delicate watercolour painting with gouache details by the well-listed artist Ian Gilbert Marr Eadie. The scene depicts a street view in the small French village of Saint-Avit-Sénieur. The main subject seems to be the large bright green tree in the centre of the painting, which brings a sense of liveliness to the view. There is a label to reverse inscribed with the title and additional details. There is also a larger label, which provides further information on Saint-Avit-Sénieur, as well as the artist's painting process. Well-presented in a washline mount and in a simple wooden frame. Signed and dated. On watercolour paper.

Condition

Painting in fine condition. Some surface marks and small tears to the margins of the mount. Minor scuffs to the frame.

Artist Biography

Ian Gilbert Marr Eadie (1913-1973) was a painter, born in Dundee, Scotland who studied at Dundee College of Art, 1931-36. He was awarded a travelling scholarship to France and Italy, 1936-37 and during this time he also attended the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris. On his return to England, he designed and painted murals for the 1938 Empire Exhibition in London. In 1938 he began to exhibit at the RSA and during 1939 he worked in London studying under Mark Gertler at Westminster School of Art. Between 1939-40 he taught at Dundee College of Art and 1940-46 he saw active war service with the Gordon Highlanders in North Africa and Europe. During World War II in he held a solo travelling exhibition through Scotland. These were mainly war drawings and paintings and many were purchased by the Imperial War Museum in London. In the 1950’s and 1960’s he was commissioned to produce murals for public and commercial buildings throughout Scotland. After the end of the war he taught at Dundee until his death in 1973. His work is represented in the Aberdeen Art Gallery, Dundee Art Galleries and Museums, the Gordon Highlanders Museum and Perth Art Gallery and Museum.
