Hubert Arthur Finney was a British painter, draughtsman, and teacher. He showed early promise, attending evening classes at Bromley School of Art from 1915, and in 1918 won a trade scholarship to Beckenham School of Art. He subsequently studied painting with Amy Katherine Browning and etching with Eric Gill. Around 1927 he won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art, where he studied under William Rothenstein — who befriended and drew him — alongside fellow students including Barnett Freedman, Percy Horton, Albert Houthuesen, Morris Kestelman, and Gerald Ososki. Following graduation in 1929, he took up a travelling scholarship to Rome. He then returned to teach part-time at Chelsea School of Art under Percy Hague Jowett and later Harold Sandys Williamson. In the period 1927–34 Finney exhibited several times at the New English Art Club, and in 1935 his painting 'Mother and Child' was acquired by Carlisle Art Gallery. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition (in 1950 and 1954), the Portrait Society, and the Paris Salon. A large solo exhibition was held at the University of Oxford's Institute of Education in 1964. He taught part-time at Reading University, where he was in charge of life drawing until his retirement in 1970. His subjects encompassed landscapes, portraits, and figure subjects. Despite the breadth and quality of his output, his achievements remained largely unseen during his lifetime, partly owing to his reclusive nature and reluctance to exhibit. A posthumous exhibition — the first in over fifty years — brought renewed attention to his work, drawing on unrecorded paintings from his studio and a recently discovered autobiography.
