Artist Biography
Howard Phipps is a wood engraver and painter, born in Colwyn Bay, North Wales. Phipps studied painting and printmaking at Gloucester College of Art, later furthering his studies at Brighton. He has exhibited at the Royal West of England Academy and at the Royal Academy, winning a Christie's Contemporary Print Award in the 1985 Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. He has held solo exhibitions at Salisbury Playhouse, Victoria Art Gallery, Bath, and Cheltenham Art Gallery. Phipps was elected to the RWA and Society of Wood Engravers in 1985.
In 2004 he received the Landscape Engraving Prize of the National Print Exhibition in London, for the second successive year. Howard Phipps has illustrated a number of books for publishers such as Bloomsbury, The Fleece Press, Country Life Magazine, The Folio Society and the Whittington Press.
