Description

A fine watercolour painting by the artist Howard Gull Stormont (1844-1923). The scene depicts an atmospheric view across a still river with sheep grazing under an autumnal oak. The watercolour has been signed by the artist to the lower right and dated 1894. Well-presented in a sleek gilt-effect frame. On watercolour paper.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration to the watercolour and light wear to the frame. There is a small loss to the lower left corner of the frame and several small imperfections in the glazing.

Artist Biography

Painter born in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire. Nothing is known of his art education but he was a prolific exhibitor showing at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, Bruton Galleries, Dudley Gallery, Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, International Society of Sculptors, Painters & Gravers, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Hibernian Academy, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, Ridley Art Club and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. He allegedly eloped to Rye, Sussex with Mary Elizabeth Sapworth marrying in 1898. In 1920 they were joint founders of the Rye Art Club and as one would expect Rye Art Gallery has several examples of his work.
