Artist Biography

Horatio Walter Lonsdale (1844-1919) was born in Mexico of British parents, and came to England in 1851 with his elder brother and widowed mother. They lived at the family home in Dorchester. He completed his education at the Royal Academy Schools, where he studied architecture. He is best known for his stained glass window designs. He established a long partnership with the architect William Burges, working with him on many of his major commissions, including Saint Fin Barre's Cathedral, Cardiff Castle, Castell Coch and Burges's Yorkshire churches.
