Holmes Winter (1851-1935) - Original 1873 Graphite Drawing. Drawn on card with an decorative embossed border. Signed. Condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration.

Holmes Edwin Cornelius Winter was born in Great Yarmouth in 1851 the son of the artist Cornelius Jason Walter Winter (1820-1891), moved to Gorleston and then to Norwich with his father. Holmes studied at the Norwich School of Art and as a young man travelled around the country on walking tours with Frederick Kitton, a boyhood friend with whom he would go sailing on the Broads on the boat they owned between them. Marrying in 1879 Holmes moved to the St.Albans area where he died in 1935. He occasionally signed his father's works as his own, and also signed his own work with the pseudonym 'W Rowland'. Towards the end of his life he became insane.
