Artist Biography
Painter and printmaker Philip Gregory Needell (1886-1974) was born in Islington, London. After school Needell worked for Westminster Bank, taking part-time lessons in drawing at Regent Street Polytechnic. He served in the First World War and was a signalman on the Armed Merchant Cruiser, HMS Almanzora, where he served for two years. After the war, he resumed his life in banking until his retirement in 1942. He exhibited regularly at the Society of Graver-Printers in Colour between 1927 and 1936. Needell was also fascinated by Japanese prints, and made his own woodcuts.
