Hermann Vogel (1856-1918) - Late 19thC Ink Drawing Outside The Theatre Box

Description

A highly accomplished pen and ink drawing showing an elaborate theatre interior. A gentleman can be seen having his coat taken by a maid, before he enters his theatre box. A portrait and a plaster bust on a plinth next to a pair of heavy curtains frame the scene. The artist has signed to the lower left edge. The picture has a blank square left in the lower left corner, likely for text, as this appears to be part of a series or strip. On wove.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. There is minor dirtying to the surface and the lower right corner has been cut off. The upper right corner has a glue mark.

Artist Biography

Vogel was born in Flensburg, Duchy of Schleswig. He came to Hamburg in 1864 and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich from 1872–78. Vogel then moved to Paris and became a French citizen.

Vogel illustrated numerous books and contributed drawings and paintings to magazines, especially L'assiette de beurre. Vogel died in Paris. His son was the art publisher and journalist Lucien Vogel (1886–1954).
