Description

An expressive oil painting by British artist Herbert Victor Tempest (1913-2003). The scene depicts a bright and open rural landscape, with fertile fields planted with yellow oilseed rape. This wonderful composition, shows clear modernist influences, illustrated by the artist's proficiency in subject and medium. Signed to the lower left corner. The rural scene has been presented in a distressed gilt-effect frame with inner grey window and pastel blue accent. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

Inspection under UV light reveals several area of overpainting on the front of the canvas, particularly in the top left-hand corner. Some wear and splitting at the frames mitre joints. However, the overall condition of the painting is good.

Artist Biography

Painter, born in Swaffham, Norfolk but taken to London as a child by his parents. He studied at Woolwich School of Art, 1927-32 and at the Royal College of Art 1932-36. His teaching career included many years at St. Martin's School of Art, London having also previously been on the staff at Leicester School of Art. A frequent exhibitor he showed at the RA, RBA and NEAC. Examples of his work are in the permanent collections of Wolverhampton Art Gallery and New Walk Museum & Art Gallery, Leicester.
