Artist Biography

Herbert Menzies Marshall (1841-1913) was a painter of topographical watercolours born in Leeds. He was educated at Westminster School and Trinity College, Cambridge. He went on to study architecture under the Parisian architect Charles-Auguste Questel (1807-1888), and furthered his studies at the Royal Academy Schools, where in 1868 he won a Travelling Scholarship. He then worked mainly in London producing scenes of topographical watercolours for exhibition and publication. Marshall showed work regularly at the Royal Watercolour Society, Fine Art Society, New English Art Club, New Gallery, and Royal Academy. He was elected an Associate at the RWS in 1879, a full member in 1883, and acted as Vice-President during the years 1898-1900. He was also elected to the Art Workers' Guild, Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers, and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. In 1904, he was appointed Professor of Landscape Painting at Queen's College, London.
