Artist Biography

Painter in oils of portraits and figures, etcher and craftsman in metal work. Son of John Rabone Harvey and born in London. He studied at the Birmingham School of Art, winning many prizes for drawing and painting. He also won a scholarship to study at the Royal College of Art, later winning a travelling scholarship which enabled him to work in Italy to study the Old Masters, which was to be his main influence together with Rembrandt in his mature works. He was principally known for his figure and interior subjects in the style and period of Rembrandt, but he was also a competent painter of flowers, landscapes and still life. Harvey also designed and executed the escutcheons for the Marble Arch in London. He was friendly with Winston Churchill during World War I and gave him some art instruction and was later commissioned by him to paint a portrait of his wife Clementine. He only exhibited once at the Royal Academy in 1910 but regularly at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists throughout his career. He also exhibited at other provincial centres in Liverpool, Hull and at the Paris Salon. He was elected an Associate of the RBSA in 1920 and a full member in 1924.
