A watercolour study of rooftops with a city skyline in the distance, possibly of Illinois, where the American Herbert J. Day (1875-1950) lived. Signed. On board.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration, very minor foxing, and paint loss to all corners of the board (see photos). Mount burn is particularly visible to the upper left corner.

Artist Biography

Herbert Day emigrated to the USA as a child from London, and spent most of his life in Illinois after receiving his training from the Arts Institute of Chicago and Smith Academy. He worked in both oil and watercolours favouring landscapes. He exhibited widely at events around America, including the Hoosier Salon (1930), the Art Institute, Chicago artists Annual Exhibitions, and the All Illinois Society of Fine Arts.
