A view from a lakeside amid the rushes. Presented in a cream mount and a distressed gilt-effect wooden frame. Signed to the lower-right edge. On watercolour paper.

Condition

There is some mild foxing and discolouration and some small scuffs to the frame.

Artist Biography

Herbert Henry Hughes Richardson was born in Worcester. He worked as a decorator at the Royal Worcester Porcelain Factory before becoming a full-time landscape painter in 1920. Painter. His family moved to Wales in 1900 where he initially worked as a miner. He wrote poetry for awhile but soon decided to pursue a career as an artist. In 1908 he married Kate Marian Hughes and together they raised eight children living for a time in Risca, South Wales. During the First World War he served as a private in the 8th Worcester Regiment. Richardson painted landscapes, garden scenes and still lifes, particularly flower studies, and claimed to have made over 2000 watercolours during his career. He exhibited at the Cambridge Drawing Society in 1938. During the Second World War he moved to the Midlands and undertook war work.
