Artist Biography

Little-known etcher born in Pabianice, Poland whose most famous image is arguably a boxing match. Cutner was born Hyman Cotner to Russian/Polish immigrant parents and studied at the London County Council Bolt Court School of Art and at the Central School of Arts & Crafts, where his tutors included Walter Bayes and Frank Lewis Emanuel. His early profession is listed as an artist and Cutner showed at the Society of Graphic Artists and was by profession a journalist writing articles for various publications such as Teach Yourself Commercial Art and Teach Yourself Etching. The V&A has an example of his work. Cutner lived in London and was married the artist Effie Spring-Smith.
