The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration, particularly to the edges of the paper. The watercolour is faded in areas which has caused the painting to lose its brightness. There is light foxing.

Henry Schafer was a genre painter and sculptor who exhibited both pictures and sculpture at the Royal Academy, Grosvenor Gallery and elsewhere from 1875. He should not be confused with the topographical artist, Henri Schafer (Schaefer or Schäfer), a little-known but prolific painter of French background who specialised in town scenes, often showing cathedral interiors and exteriors. Henry Thomas Schafer was an elected member of the RBA and exhibited there and at the RA, RI, ROI, RSA, RBSA, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and MAFA. Torre Abbey Museum has an example.
A book entitled ‘Notes on the Cleaning Restoration, and Preservation of Paintings’ was written by one Henry Thomas Schafer and published by J. Watson, London in 1901. As yet I am not certain which Schafer this is although it is most likely the British Schafer.
