Overall the condition is very good. There is some surface dirt but the painting maintains a vibrancy. Marks and scuffs to the frame. Inspection under UV light reveals no restoration.

Henry Marvell Carr was a painter, born in Leeds, Yorkshire, who studied at Leeds College of Art from 1912-14 and during his time there showed with the Yorkshire Union of Artists and later at the RCA in London. Carr served in the Royal Field Artillery during World War I and during World War II was an Official War Artist in North Africa and Italy. He later taught at Leeds, (1919-20) and at Beckenham School of Art for seventeen years, becoming Head of the school in the 1930s. He showed at RA who elected him a member in 1966 and at the RBA, New English Art Club and RP both of which societies also elected him a member.
In 1956 he won a Gold Medal in the Paris Salon and he was regularly commissioned to paint many portraits.
