Macbeth-Raeburn was a painter and printmaker and son of the artist Norman Macbeth (1821-1888). Born in Helensburgh, Scotland. Macbeth-Raeburn studied at Edinburgh University, Royal Scottish Academy Schools, and at Académie Julian in Paris. He was elected a member of RE in 1905 and of RA in 1933 and served on both their councils. He was a member and exhibitor at the Ipswich Art Club 1943-45 and also exhibited at ROI, RSA, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, and at the RI. He was a member of the Chelsea Arts Club and his work is in the GAC.
