Henry Jutsum (1816-1869) - Framed Watercolour Family River Scene

Description

An attractive river scene painted in watercolour by 19th century artist Henry Jutsum (1816-1869). In the foreground a mother and daughter can be seen preparing to cross stepping stones with their skirts up, while father and son tackle the wooden stile with their fishing kit. The artist has signed the scene to the lower left, and the painting has been beautiful presented in a custom wash-line mount and slim gilt frame. On paper.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration to the watercolour and selective areas of craquelure with gum arabic. The wash-line mount is also slightly discoloured.

Artist Biography

Henry Jutsum was a landscape painter, born in London and educated in Devon.

In 1839 he became a pupil of James Stark. Jutsum exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1836 and 1869 and also at the British Institution, Suffolk Street and the New Watercolour Society.

For sometime the artist devoted himself to watercolour painting, but ultimately he preferred painting in oil. Jutsum resigned his membership of the New Watercolour Society in 1848, after which time he painted mainly in oil.
