Henry Joseph Reynolds was born in Islington and started painting at the age of nine. A self-taught artist, he moved to North Essex in the 1920s after his brother bought a cottage in Wethersfield. He is best known for his local landscapes - mainly delicately drawn and softly-toned watercolours.
Unable to make a living as an artist locally, H. J. Reynolds returned to London as a commercial artist. He exhibited at the London Salon around 1918, and exhibited a Welsh scene with the British watercolours Society in Blackpool in 1923.
