A fine bucolic landscape view by the listed English artist Henry Harris (1852-1926), depicting a countryside setting with figures. A family group look out to fields with cattle, while a gentleman strolls down the lane. The setting has a hazy light, evocative of the late English summer, and the artist produces depth with fine layered brushwork.
Well-presented in an ornate gilt slip, with foliate moulding, ribbon twist beading and fish scale running pattern, as shown. Signed faintly but distinctly under strong light, to the lower left.
On canvas on stretchers.In very good condition overall, for a picture of this age. There is some light surface discolouration. Inspection under UV light reveals no restoration. The gilt slip is in fine condition.

Henry Harris (1852-1926) was a painter born in Cullompton, Devon, his father William Harris was a Miller and had a large family, 15 sons in all. In 1862 the family moved to Bristol and it appears he started his career as a sailor, for there is a family story that at the age of about 17 he piloted a steamboat around the coast of Wales. Before he became a professional easel artist, Henry Harris worked as a self-employed painter and interior decorator. He painted murals in houses on the Bristol Downs that were being built and then in 1875, he took up painting as a full-time occupation. He worked both in oil and watercolour and specialised in landscape and river scenes, very often including cattle.
His pictures mostly depict local Bristol views and from Frome to the river Severn. He also executed a number of paintings in the Monmouthshire area and views of Chepstow and Tintern Abbey. He rarely exhibited work as he sold the majority of it directly to business people, often for wedding presents. A brother George Harris, was also an artist, who painted local scenes in oils, his works are usually of a lesser quality, and he often satisfied himself with replicating many adaptations of the identical subject.
