Signs of wear consistent with age. Inspection under UV light reveals some areas of minor overpainting. Minor wear to the corners of the frame to include a small loss to the lower right corner. There is a small split to the ripple profile in the upper right. The overall condition of the artwork is very good.

Henry Edward Detmold (1854-1924) was an English painter and illustrator who specialised in landscape, figure, and marine painting. Born into an affluent merchant family of German origin, he became a founding member of the Newlyn School. Detmold trained at prestigious art institutions in Düsseldorf, Brussels, and Munich before studying under Carolus-Duran in Paris. From 1879 onward, his works were exhibited in both London and Paris, and he regularly travelled between the two cities from 1881 to 1900. The Newlyn School, which he helped establish, was a group of landscape painters based in the coastal town of Newlyn in Cornwall, many of whom had also trained on the Continent.
