Henry Cole (1808-1882) - Watercolour Castle and Herdsman in a Landscape

Henry Cole - Original Mid 19th Century Watercolour. A fine classical landscape study of an Alpine castle and two travellers with their ox. In a washline mount and gold painted frame. Please note the cord seen on the back of the picture will not be included in the purchase. Unsigned. On wove. Condition is typical for a picture of this age including discolouration and foxing. Two spots of water damage to the centre top. Small creases to the paper, particularly at the lower edge, with a small tear to the lower right edge, measuring approx. 1.5 cm high.

Henry Cole was born in Bath, England. He studied painting under the great watercolourist David Cox. He had a career in the civil service and was the organiser of the 1851 Great Exhibition, acting as Prince Albert's chief advisor. He was then appointed as General Superintendent at what is now the Victoria and Albert Museum. He exhibited his own work at the Royal Academy in 1866. In 1976 Cole's portrait was painted by the artist James Abbott McNeil Whistler.
