An original autumnal rural landscape in the realist style, painted in 1883 by the Victorian artist Henry Clements in oil on canvas. Several figures, including a young child, have been portrayed in a bucolic rural setting, sitting on a felled tree by the roadside. A horse and cart is leaving the scene, with a cottage to the right nestled amongst trees and bushes.
The artist demonstrates a high level of proficiency in the medium, ranging from the finely detailed dress of the figures to the overall hazy but flattering light of an early evening, possibly towards the end of summer. The artist has composed this work with an obvious influence of both Romanticism and the Picturesque Movement, two styles that were still abundantly popular in the 19th Century.
Other similar works by Clements have been sold by both Christie's and Bonham's in London, and his work can be found in international collections, including in South Africa.
Handsomely presented in a gilt wooden frame, with fluted cove and beaded mouldings, as can be seen in the images provided. Signed and dated 1883 to the lower left corner, and inscribed to the reverse 'Rural Scene, H. Clements 1883' as shown.
Signed and dated and inscribed. On canvas on stretchers.In very good condition for a picture of this age, including some discolouration, craquelure and surface dirt. There are some visible brown spots to the upper left quadrant. Some losses to the inner beaded moulding, mainly to the right edge, and general scuffing and small marks to the sides and corners of the frame, as shown.
