Description

An atmospheric oil painting by Henry Bishop, depicting a quiet French village square, characterised by traditional white-rendered buildings with terracotta rooftops clustered around an open plaza. The composition is anchored by a prominent cream-coloured building with a street lamp in the left foreground, whilst the muted palette and soft earth tones evoke the gentle light of an overcast day in provincial France. Well presented in a cream-coloured frame. Signed 'H. Bishop' lower right. On canvas.

Condition

The artwork exhibits signs of wear consistent with age. Fine craquelure is observed throughout the paint surface. Inspection under UV light reveals no apparent restoration.The frame has minor surface wear, including small chips and scuffs. Overall, the artwork presents in very good condition.

Artist Biography

Henry Bishop was born in London and subsequently studied at the Slade, in Paris, Brussels and Pittsburgh, USA. He also travelled in the Middle East. In 1888 he was one of the founder members of the St Ives Arts Club. His exhibiting career was extensive and primarily involved showing at the NEAC and the RA.
