Description

Sea birds can be seen circulating above two uneasy boats navigating their way out of Whitby harbour. Inscribed in pen to the lower left. The watercolour has been well presented in a delicate gilt frame with scrolling acanthus ornamentation and a new card mount. On watercolour paper.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some minor discolouration and foxing to the paper. The gilt frame has stable cracking at all four corner ornament but no significant losses.

Artist Biography

Born in London, Henry Barlow Carter (1795–1867) moved to Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire, in 1830 to work as a drawing master. He went on to settle with his wife at Scarborough on the Yorkshire coast. It was here that he was inspired to paint Yorkshire's bracing coastal landscape, for which he became best-known.
