Maximiliaan Louis Maas - better known by his nickname, Henk - was born in Rotterdam on March 21, 1924. He pursued formal training at the art academies in Rotterdam and The Hague, as well as under Henri Frédéric Boot in Haarlem. In the early years of his career, Maas produced naturalistic, classical academic works, including still lifes, portraits, and interior scenes. However, his style eventually evolved toward abstraction. Maas was not commercially driven and made little effort to market or sell his art. As a result, restoration work became increasingly central to his livelihood, and by the 1970s, he stopped producing new works of his own. Despite stepping away from painting, Maas remained deeply engaged with the art world. His technical mastery was widely recognized, and he developed an extensive knowledge of art history. This expertise allowed him to build a refined art collection, guided by a keen professional eye. On a modest budget, he amassed a distinguished collection of over 300 works by artists such as Isaac Israels, George Hendrik Breitner, Anton Mauve, Willem Witsen, and Leo Gestel.
