From a folio of graphite and pastel drawings, watercolours and pen and ink drawings by the artist, some of which are signed. Helmut Petzsch, SSA (1920-2008) was a painter in oil and watercolour of landscapes, urban scenes, and figure subjects. He was born in Berlin to a German father and English mother and following the death of his father in 1932 Helmut came with his family to England where they became naturalised British citizens. He served in the British Army in World War II, and on demobilisation he was accepted as a student at Edinburgh College of Art 1947-51, where he studied under William Gillies. He exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy from 1952, and also extensively with the Society of Scottish Artists, being elected a member of that group in 1951. He wrote a book 'Architecture in Scotland' which was published by Longman in 1971, and lived in Edinburgh for many years.
