An expressive abstract piece by listed British artist Hector McDonald Sutton. The contrast between the monochrome pastels and the red buff wove creates a graphic feel, typical of Sutton's style. Laid to backing card and protected by an overlay sheet which has been inscribed with the artist's name and title 'Abstract 63-4 Red Background'. Unsigned.Condition
There are pinhole marks to the corners and some light smudging to the fragile medium.

Artist Biography
Sutton was born in Walsall Wood, Staffordshire and studied at Southport and Liverpool Schools of Art before going on to the Royal College of Art. Between 1928-1937, he assisted Alfred Kingsley Lawrence, one of his tutors at the Royal College of Art, to complete the Bank of England Murals. Working as a painter, mural artist, print maker and later as a sculptor, Sutton exhibited at the Royal Academy and in the provinces. He held a number of teaching posts, becoming the first principal of Mansfield College of Art and was th adviser to Nottinghamshire Education Committee.
