Harriette Harkness - Signed & Framed 1854 Oil Magpie & Fanny

Description

A wonderful mid 19th century oil capturing three horses in a paddock. The detail and fine draughtsmanship of this composition suggest a competent artist, well versed in the study of horses and their form. An inscription on the reverse gives the names of each horse, 'Magpie - height 14.2, the property of Harriette Harkness, painted from life by her in 1854. Fanny - foal. Achmet - 15 hands - Sir Chas Lamb, Beaufort bay Arab, Sire of the foal.'

This fine painting is very well presented in an ornate, swept gilt frame.With material slip. Part of the signature is visible to the lower right.

Condition

Overall the condition is very good for a painting of this age. With areas of craqueleure and very minor discolouration. Inspection under UV light reveals a very small sign of restoration to the sky area, just above the main horse, with touches of overpainting to the cloud area. The ornate frame also appears to be in very good condition. Small cracks and marks to some areas. Break to the upper right corner moulding, however frame is intact.
