Artist Biography

Harold Sayer was an etcher and printmaker, born in Isleworth, Middlesex. He studied graphic art, first at Willesden College of Art, 1930-33, and then at the RCA, 1933-36. After completing his studies with a pedagogical year at Goldsmiths' College, he commenced his teaching career at Christ's College, Finchley, in 1938. This was interrupted by war service as a Meteorological Officer in the Fleet Air Arm, after which he returned to teaching, eventually becoming Head of the Design Department at St. Paul's College, Cheltenham, 1948-76. He held numerous exhibitions and was a regular exhibitor at the RA, RWA, and RE. Sayer was elected a Fellow of the RE and RWA, and in the year of his death held a solo exhibition at the Upton Lodge Gallery, Tetbury.
