Artist Biography
Hans Venter (1892-1971) was a German graphic artist whose career spanned both world wars and the dramatic social changes of 20th-century Germany. Born in Chemnitz, he served as a soldier in World War I before establishing himself as an art educator, teaching drawing at a secondary school in his hometown from 1920 onward. A trip to Italy in 1924 expanded his artistic perspective and influenced his developing style. His career was again interrupted by military service in World War II, followed by an extended period as a prisoner of war that lasted until 1955. After his release, he relocated to Göttingen, where he spent his final years creating and exhibiting works. He became an active member of the prestigious Griffelkunstvereinigung Hamburg, up until his death in 1971.
