Signs of wear consistent with age. Discolouration and areas of craquelure. Some scuffs around the margins where the frame has rubbed against the paint surface. Inspection under UV light reveals no restoration. Scuffs and small losses to the frame.

Hans August Lassen (1857-1938) was a German-Danish painter of portraits, still lifes, and genre scenes. Lassen attended the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1881 to 1887. He specialised in depicting lively tavern scenes and gatherings of gentlemen. He also painted a half-length oil painting of Prince Otto von Bismarck. He lived in Düsseldorf until 1910, and subsequently in Ratingen.
