A far-reaching view towards Loch Lomond in southern Scotland. Presented glazed in a washline mount with gilt-effect detailing and a distressed gilt-effect wooden frame. Unsigned. Labels attached to the reverse include details of biography, provenance, and the location of the painting. On wove.Condition
There is some minor foxing and discolouration. Overall in very good condition.

Artist Biography
Hamilton Maxwell RSW (1830-1923) was a painter who was born in Glasgow. He primarily painted watercolours of landscapes and topographical subjects. Maxwell trained for a business career but lived in Australia from 1852-56 working as a gold prospector. On returning to England he worked for two years in Derbyshire and then left for India in 1878 where he was appointed Sheriff and Chairman at the Bank of Bombay. Three years later he returned to Scotland and began painting full-time. Widely travelled, he kept a studio in Paris from 1893-98 and exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Watercolour Society, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour, Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, Aberdeen Artists' Society, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, and acted as President of the Glasgow Art Club in 1909.
