The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. The board has been slightly misshapen with a dip to the centre of the painting.

Hal Woolfe (1902-1964) was born and raised in London. Woolf studied engineering at London University before moving to Chelsea School of Art, 1920-22 before a spell in Paris at Académie de la Grande Chaumière. He became chiefly a landscape painter, travelling in Europe and the Middle East and exhibited widely during the interwar years. After the war he showed at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, Royal Academy of Arts, Redfern Gallery and Royal Institute of Oil Painters. During World War II he served as a Captain in the Royal Engineers working with the Camouflage Unit. Woolf lived by his art until 1953 when, unable to follow the latest trends, he took on various jobs, becoming the last employed lamplighter in the Postal Department of London University. The Shell Heritage Art Collection holds an example of his poster work. Woolf tragically passed away in 1964 after being hit by a car in central London.
