There is slight discolouration to the mount and minor losses to the corners of the frame which have been retouched.

Artist Biography
Artist and illustrator born in Elephant & Castle, London and commonly known as Hal Hurst. He began his career as an artist by documenting, in a series of drawings, 'The Troubles' in Ireland. He then went to the USA where he worked as an illustrator for newspapers in Philadelphia and New York. Following his return to Europe, he studied art at the Royal Academy Schools and at the Académie Julian in Paris. Hurst exhibited extensively at the Royal Society of British Artists. His work was also shown at the New Gallery, Royal Academy, RI, Royal Miniature Society, RWS, Walker Art Gallery and at the Royal Hibernian Academy. He was a founder member of the Royal Miniature Society in 1896 and Vice President of the Society from 1896 to 1913. He was also elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1900. Magazines to which he contributed illustrations included 'Harper's Weekly', 'Vanity Fair', 'Illustrated London News', 'Cassell's Family Magazine' and 'The Idler'. The March 1919 edition of Colour Magazine feathers one of his paintings on its cover. Hurst is represented in the collections of Aberdeen University, the National Library of Wales and the Royal Society. Hurst died in Edenbridge, Kent.
