A very fine original landscape work in oil, dated 1898, by the unknown artist 'H.M.', depicting livestock with a farmhouse on the banks of a river. In a traditional style, this work is characteristically Victorian, with an emphasis on light and shadow. The culmination of the Picturesque movement had a clear influence in this period. Handsomely presented in a substantial gilt wooden frame, with moulded cove and ornate running patterns, as shown. Signed indistinctly, On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
In good condition overall. There is a small repair to the canvas near the centre, that has been fully restored previously. Some light stable craquelure, as expected for a picture of this age. The frame has small areas of restoration.
