H.F.T. - Late 19th Century Oil Tandem Gig

Description

A painting of three gentlemen riding in a gig. The pair of horses are driven in tandem, one in front of the other, rather than abreast. This method was popular from the mid to late nineteenth century as a sociable way to meet a hunt and was considered a difficult and often dangerous means of driving. The lead horse would typically be the horse that the owner would hunt with. Presented in a gilt effect wooden frame with a beaded inner edge. Signed indistinctly to the lower-right corner. On board.

Condition

There is some minor surface dirt and some slight scuffs and scratches to the frame. Overall in good condition. Inspection under UV light reveals no restoration.
